News from the North!

I received an e-mail from Aunt Muffy a couple of days ago.  I've been too busy to get it posted right away, but now is the time!  After reading it, I decided that I should just put it right here for you to  read in her own words.

So here is Part 1 of Summer in Timmins 2012.....

As you may recall, last fall they dealt out the store in Schumacher that Tim had been managing for the whole time we've been up here.  He was moved to the only corporate store that was left in our district.  As the threat of that store being dealt out also was very high, Tim decided that rather than risk being jobless, he would become a dealer in that store.  The official takeover occurred April 23, 2012.

One week later - April 30 - Tim had headed into work on the bus as usual.  A little later I get a phone call from him.  I figure it's just him letting me know he got to work OK (he was working midnights, so I liked to know he didn't fall asleep on the bus - don't laugh, it's happened).

But what I get is "Hi.  My store's on fire."  Now me, knowing that fire is one of Tim's biggest fears, is thinking he's kidding - you know, there's a problem with the roller grill or something that he's blowing out of proportion - says back questioningly "Your store's really on fire?"  He says back "Ya, I'm on the bus and I can't see the store" (there was so much smoke he literally could not see the store).  He was just calling to let me know he and the staff were OK in case I saw it on the news.  He stayed there until fire was out - someone brought him home in the wee hours.

Visited the store the next morning.  From the outside you can't even tell anything is wrong.
(Pic 1 - notice the pole sign Tim just put up that morning)
The only spot outside you see anything is one little vent at the back of the store where you can see a bit of soot staining.
(Pic 2)

Going into the store, except for the God-awful smoke stench, initially you can't see anything really wrong. (Things are sooty, but it's not noticeable on casual inspection.)  The fire apparently started over the walk-in fridge.  As it happens, there are 2 sub-ceilings in that store from multiple renovations and the fire ran rampant in that space between the two.  The walk-in and the ceiling are the only really badly burned things.  Hard to see from ground level.

(Ceiling - Pic 3&4)

(Cooler - Pic 5-7 - I love the one with all the orange that looks like it is still on fire - that was  only visible when the flash hit it, it was too dark in there to see before I snapped the picture).

The back storage room was pretty destroyed, partly from the fire, partly from attempts to put out the fire.

The slushee syrup lines ran thru the ceiling there and melted from the heat causing the syrup waterfall in Pic 8, and the gorey CSI looking mess on the floor

(Pic 9).

Most of the store was just sooty and smokey - nothing to take pictures of.

The next week was spent dealing with big wigs and insurance adjusters and stuff while they tried to determine the cause of the fire, the extent of the damage and what insurance would cover etc.  It was finally decided that the store was basically a write-off just because everything was sooty and smelled like smoke.

Didn't really go back to the store after that as nothing we could do there.  We just get word every once in a while on progress or lack thereof.  The insurance people really held things up for a while as they couldn't agree with Mac's over who would do the demolition and restoration work.  When that was finally resolved, then there was a hold up getting the roof joists (the back half of the roof needed to be replaced) as that had to be done before they could start any work inside.  While they were waiting for the new joists, they started to remove the old roof in prep.  I got these pics at about this stage

(Pic 10&11)..   They had also removed most of the fixtures and stock by this point.  The store was basically stripped inside to floor and walls, which they were keeping.  Now, don't know if you noticed in those last pics that the roof people didn't do a great job tarping the roof..  We got alot of rain and storms right about this time.  Just guess where this is going....Yup!!!....store got flooded.  Now they have to rip out all the walls and floor and totally replace.  Just added another month til we can reopen.  Since then new roof is on and store is now completely gutted - just the shell.  I believe that they are finally starting the interior work now from what I can gather.  Sorry, no pics - they don't let us inside since they started demoing for safety - you know.
They're hoping to have the store back up by late September now - but it will be basically completely all new and shiny - they've done a complete redesign since they're starting from scratch anyway.  (They had been going to do some reno in the store this summer anyway, although I don't think this was the extent they had in mind).

Well, that's pretty much where we stand with the store right now.

And thats the end of Part 1.

Hope you get the pics OK.

Part 2 - the House to follow.

And that is the news to date from Up North.  They have had an eventful year so far!  I'm awaiting Part 2 with some anticipation!  Thanks for the up-date Aunt Muffy - and thanks for letting me publish your story and pics!

And Finally....

..... I would also like to say Happy Birthday to Uncle David and Auntie Jean - they both had a birthday earlier this month!  And last, but not least....
.... our Little Smiley turned two last Sunday.  Goodness - it doesn't seem like two years ago that we looked for the first time into those big brown eyes!  In honour of that special day, Mommy and Daddy took him to the zoo.  Happily, Poppa and I were invited to accompany them!  They had been to that zoo before.  There were free pony rides for little people...and Munchie had a pony ride, but Little Smiley couldn't get on the pony because he wasn't two yet!  So, on Sunday....

.... he got his pony ride!  He was so happy!  Of course,
... Munchie had to have a turn too.  Then we stopped for a Creature Feature show...
... where both little boys got to touch some interesting creatures, ie.- a baby kangaraoo, a large snake, a large lizard of some variety, a lemur...and a few other things which now escape my memory.  After that....
... we headed up the trail to see what else we could see....
... like this camel........he was one of the more exotic animals on view - and I couldn't believe how tall he was.  A few years ago Auntie Cecile was on a trip and rode one of these critters.  I kept looking up and trying to imagine her perched away up there!  Of course, there were other animals there too - some we were quite familiar with....
... and this one was Squeegie's favourite!  There were several varieties of monkeys cavorting around....
.. and we especially enjoyed watching these two!  As we were leaving, I managed to get....
... those two little monkeys to stand still long enough for a picture with this little bear!  All in all, we had a fun day with the little boys as well as Mommy and Daddy.  Thanks for inviting us.... and Happy Birthday to the youngest member of our family!

More Birthday....

Let me see - where did I leave off?  Oh yes... birthdays.  Well on Saturday ......
.... while I was waiting for Poppa to rise and shine, I finished yet another Jack Reacher novel well-written by Lee Child.......and enjoyed it just as much as all the other Lee Child novels I've raced through in the last year.  I am so glad I discovered this series of books!  Later in the day, after having a Bacon Egger from A&W (our usual Saturday morning treat), we stopped....
.... for a short visit with Great-Gramma - where Poppa sat in his favourite perch - I love this picture!  Following the visit we carried on to the grocery store, where....
... we bought groceries of course - as well as 15 bottles of my favourite water.  What?  We like to stock up since Poppa often drinks it too, and we wouldn't want to suddenly find ourselves with none in the cold room!  Finally, after supper, we headed....
... to church.  This is the church we attend when we are in Canada.... in stark comparison to the tiny church established in a strip mall that we attend in Florida.  I have been going to this beautiful limestone church since I was 9 years old - and I still love it!  And - just to make it better - we met Granny and Gramps in the parking lot!  They had come from their house (a three hour drive) to help....
.. Auntie Cecile celebrate a very special birthday!  Happy Birthday Auntie Cecile!  We gave her our best wishes and headed home.  Poppa went out to water his outdoor plants, while I worked some more on a replacement blanket for Munchie....
.... whose previous blanket met a horrible end!  Oops!  Time to rush off to work again..... more in the next chapter!

Birthday Weekend

A couple of weeks ago, we went out for dinner with.....
...Kev-Inn and his Mom to celebrate his birthday.  Happy Birthday Kev-Inn!  The following weekend we went out for dinner with....
Granny, and of course sitting across the table from us, was....
.... Gramps and Poppa.  It had been a while since we'd had a chance to chat with them and we both enjoyed it!  Actually Poppa and Gramps had been golfing in the afternoon, but Granny had been busy visiting other relatives.... so we all got together when the golfing was done.  Later that week...
... we stopped in to see how Uncle Brian and Auntie Denise were doing with their packing.  Here they are in front of their "old" house.  The packing was going along fine - and last week they moved to their "new" house - which is out in the country.  I haven't been out there yet to get pictures, but Poppa stopped by last evening and said they were settling in.

Oh goodness, it is time to go to work - and I haven't even gotten to the week-end just past....I'll get to that after supper......

Angles

I went to work one day, and my workspace looked like this.....
.... a bright space right next to the windows.  A few days went by.....
.... we had a birthday party........
.... for Shannon and Kev-Inn.  And next thing you know.....
.... my workstation turned up in the middle of the office... goodness gracious! Another few days.....
... Taz's desk stayed right where it had always been, but....
... a whole new office appeared behind my new central location.  It turns out the boss is being re-located because we had a new Vice-President moving into her office.  The new office is all decked out for ergonomic efficiency....
..........Hmmmmmmmmm.... I think I want that desk!

Quick Note

No - I haven't given up blogging.  I've just been really busy and haven't taken the time.  Once our little boys left I needed some recovery time - I'm not used to all that activity!  I have some really cute pictures....
.... the little fellow in red is Little Smiley and the small green shirt you see away up ahead is Munchie!  They went to....
... Santa's village while I was at work one day.   More later - I'm off to work again now!

In Other News.....

I discovered Poppa working on a new project....
... this is the back stoop that he added about 4 years ago so that we could actually use the sliding glass doors from the kitchen to access the patio and the barbeque.  They are looking a little strange, but they have been bare wood for that long and were starting to look a little shabby from all the weather.

I found a couple more pictures from the week prior to this project (and the front steps), when Munchie came to visit us for a couple of days.  He and Poppa had such a good time together...... there was.......
... the morning ritual - which included washing, brushing, shaving and combing - which they did together as you can see.  One of the best moments though -
was when we took him to the grocery store.  He was a very good little fellow, so.....
... Poppa lifted him out of the cart and let him pick his own candies from the bulk bins.  It took him quite a few minutes to decide exactly what he wanted - it was so cute!

Last weekend was a big event for Uncle Shaun.... he ran in a Masters' event in a nearby city and did quite well........just in case you can't imagine it.....
......... here he is - on the move - so fast his feet aren't even touching the ground!  And note the nifty, custom shoes made for running!  Congratulations Uncle Shaun!  We are proud of you!

Meanwhile, Squeegie and Taffy are outside enjoying the nice weather.

We had rain earlier today - and we sure needed it....the grass already looks better, and in spite of all the recent dry weather we've had....
.... Poppa's plants are all flourishing, including the impatience and the salvia around the bird bath....
...and then around at the back of the house, there is..........
..... the Rose of Sharon which just lately burst into bloom.  Okay........now I guess you want to see a picture of the stoop at the back all finished........
Here it is!

Coming and Going.....

Our little boys.....
...... Munchie - seen here at the playground - is he flirting with that little girl????  And....
....Little Smiley - seen here contemplating the ingestion of a yummy looking potato chip - are coming with Mommy to stay here with me for a couple of days, while Poppa and Daddy work on some plumbing at Munchie's house.  They have been busy little fellows this summer!  They had cousin Reese for a visit at their place.....
Uncle Craig was there too.......
..... the boys went to sit with him, while they had a little rest.....and a couple of weeks later, they went to Gramma's house.....
....where they had a wonderful time on a water slide in Gramma's backyard.  They also got a chance to swim in the pool with Daddy and get cooled down on a hot day.  I believe they also played on the beach of Lake Erie (in Gramma's backyard also!), but Mommy didn't have her camera so close to all the water and splashing... so I didn't get pictures.  All in all, at the end of the day....
...everyone was ready for a nap!  Another weekend they went to a barbeque at the home of Mommy's boss and had an interesting time there too!
This was one of Munchie's favourite moments - he got to sit on a real motorcycle!  Curtie had more fun in the swimming pool - but again - wet environment - not good for cameras!  Finally they came to spend a weekend with Poppa and I....
.... they headed over to the park with Poppa...but somehow....
.... Poppa was the one who ended up on the swing!  And, Little Smiley was somewhat startled to find himself....
.... in a car with a little girl!  Later, the boys sat with me....
... to look at some pictures on the laptop.  And finally at the end of the day......
...... everyone was ready to settle down for some quiet time before bed.  Now Mommy will be coming with the boys, and Poppa will be going with Daddy.
